Indonesia recently welcomed a group of Burmese exiled Members of Parliament Union (MPs elected in 1990, the last democratic election in Burma) they spoke to the Indonesian parliament during a function marking Indonesian Independence Day. U Win Hlaing told the Indonesians
If the SPDC proceeds unilaterally as it is doing now, we asked ASEAN countries, particularly Indonesia, to do their best to help sway SPDC away from this course of action.
The group have also been lobbying in other ASEAN countries. Such regional pressure may well assist the generals to discover a way forward for the country. Their current plans for a bogus election in 2010 are unlikely to provide national unity and purpose or a foundation for progress.
